What it means

The receiver temporarily rejected the sending host for policy reasons or greylisting.

Likely causes

  • Greylisting.
  • PTR, HELO or authentication issue.
  • Reputation-based temporary rejection.

Recommended response

  1. Verify PTR and EHLO alignment.
  2. Confirm SPF, DKIM and DMARC.
  3. Retry with normal backoff.
  4. Investigate reputation if repeated.
Operational rule: Preserve the complete SMTP response, remote hostname, sending IP, envelope sender and timestamp. Never diagnose from the three-digit code alone.
