SMTP 421 Deferrals: Diagnosis and Recovery

Separate temporary provider pressure from local capacity, DNS, connection and reputation problems.

What 421 means

Use timestamps, queue IDs, remote responses, source IP, VMTA, sender domain and message class to establish the failure boundary. Avoid reacting to one isolated delivery attempt.

A 421 response is temporary. The receiving system is asking the sender to retry later. The operational question is whether the response is global, provider-specific, IP-specific, domain-specific or campaign-specific.

Evidence to capture

  • Exact enhanced status code and remote text
  • Remote MX hostname and provider
  • Source IP/VMTA and connection rate
  • Deferral rate over 15, 60 and 240 minutes
  • Queue age and retry distribution

Recovery sequence

  1. Reduce new injection for the affected route.
  2. Preserve normal retries; do not hammer the destination.
  3. Compare unaffected IPs and providers.
  4. Correct identity or reputation issues.
  5. Resume gradually and watch acceptance rate.
Operational rule: collect evidence before changing policy, make one controlled change, verify the result, and retain a rollback path.
